John Leland | Human Spirit Award

John Leland is a reporter at The New York Times. When John set out to chronicle the lives of six New Yorkers age 85 and older in a year-long series in the New York Times, he was prepared to write about the challenges of aging, loneliness and deterioration. Unexpectedly, what he found changed him and his beliefs not only about aging, but about his own life and the notion of happiness. His new book, Happiness is a Choice You Make is his collection of these lessons. Before joining the Times, he was a senior editor at Newsweek, editor in chief of Details, a reporter at Newsday, and a writer and editor at Spin.

All monies raised through the Gala will be used to improve the lives of older New Yorkers through advocacy, policy and program development
