As health information and services have grown more complex and the burden of care has shifted from provider to patient, health literacy has emerged as the pressing issues for older adults. Those who suffer from limited health literacy are less likely to access screening and prevention services, take medications as directed, and effectively navigate the healthcare system; and are at a far higher risk of hospitalization. Advanced Health Literacy Training is a skills-building workshop to enhance your ability to support older adults who suffer poor health due to limited health literacy. Drawing on evidence-based health literacy best practices and narrative medicine techniques, front-line social service staff will: Learn advanced Plain Language principles, Best practices for choosing and using health information for seniors, Use narrative medicine to deepen listening and better understand the patient and client experience, and Hone teach-back skills to ensure understanding. Audience: All level staff.
